Fighting The Fat Lady And Her Fat Cats In Texas

There's an old expression that still carries some wisdom: "It's not over 'til the fat lady sings." Taking this expression into account, we did indeed hear the fat lady warming up her vocal cords during the recent elections in Maryland, Virginia and D.C. While this lady and all her GOP fat cats have been busy making preparations for Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's campaign funeral, Huckabee's supporters in the state of Texas are working hard towards a possible victory.

Texas GOP fat cats such as Gov. Rick Perry and Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn have cashed in their conservative chips to endorse Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. Gov. Perry has even went so far as to call for Huckabee's withdrawal. Huckabee refused to bow to the pressure.

However, not all of the politicians in Texas have broke the conservative bank.

"Now that Republicans have two choices, it is clear to me that the conservative candidate is Gov. Mike Huckabee," said Rep John Culberson, (R-Houston).

Public supporters like Kelly Shackelford, head of the Plano-based "Liberty Legal Institute" have also refused to bow.

"When you look between Huckabee and McCain, the conservative choice is stark," said Shackelford.

Shackelford also pointed out that he and others will support McCain if he were to win the nomination but for now social conservatives in Texas are "100 percent Huckabee." I don't know anybody who's not," she added.

Shackelford and other Texans have formed a federal political action committee called "Texans for Conservative Principles," to support Huckabee. The organization is helping with grass-roots organization and are creating a web site to make the case that Huckabee will best represent core conservative principles.

Personally, I couldn't agree with Shackelford more. If I absolutely must, I will hold my nose and push a button labeled "McCain" in November. Until such a dreadful day, I refuse to abandon fellow conservative, Mike Huckabee in the field of battle.
