In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father" Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama openly discussed his rowdy teen years.
"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final fatal role of the young would be black man," he wrote. He went on to say that he smoked marijuana and drank alcohol, but occasionally he would snort cocaine when he could afford it.
Barack Obama recently brought this issue up again on the campaign trail.
"I will confess to you that I was kind of a goof-off in high school ... I made some bad decisions that I've written about. There were times when I got into drinking and experimented with drugs ... There was a whole stretch of time when I didn't really apply myself a lot.
By the time I was a junior or senior in college, I got really serious."
I do not hold Barack Obama's teenage antics against him. The majority of us as teenagers made immature decisions that as adults we find truly regretful.
However as a mother, there is one problem that I do have. The last statements were given to a bunch of high school kids at Central High School in Manchester, N.H.
This was not very smart and these confessions would have been much better served as an inspiration to college students.
I fear that the only thing he inspired with these statements to high schoolers was the notion that it was all right for them to goof off and experiment with drugs due to the fact that they still have plenty of time to get themselves together.
After all, that's what Barack Obama did. Look at him now! He's running for president!
Great job Obama! Next time find a priest.

That's the message I get from it. You can do drugs in high school and still be a success. Not the message I would want to send.
